Haringey Core Psychology Pathway
-
The Core Psychology Pathway is a secondary mental health care service that provides a variety of specialist psychological treatments to people living in the community in Haringey. The treatments we offer are intended to help people who are struggling with complex mental health difficulties.
Generally, the people attending our service have been struggling with their mental health for a long time and have already had an experience of attending therapy before or were deemed too complex to access talking therapies from Primary Care mental health services or IAPT. The Core Psychology Pathway can help people who are struggling with complex mental health difficulties because of the specialist knowledge that professionals working in our team have, and the specialist treatments that we have to offer.
There are a variety of treatments on offer, which intend to address different problems by drawing on different therapeutic approaches. Amongst others, we offer cognitive behavioural therapy, 1:1 and group psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-analytic therapy, and systemic therapy.
Though not a multi-disciplinary team, the Core Psychology Pathway is situated in a multi-disciplinary environment, meaning that the people accessing our service can more easily access the help of other mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, dual diagnosis workers or employment specialists if needed. This means that the Core Psychology Pathway can offer treatment to people whose mental health difficulties might mean that they are vulnerable to becoming more unwell at times and in need of extra support.
The Core Psychology Pathway works alongside the 18-25 Transitions Team, meaning that we can attend more closely to the needs of people whose care is transitioning from child and adolescent services to adult services. We also work in close connection with the Primary Care Network and Voluntary & Community Organisations in Haringey, providing people with opportunities to either prepare for the start of therapy, or to ease their departure from services.

How to access this service

Most people are referred to the service by their GP, but they might also be referred be another local mental health services. Referrals will first be sent to one of the Haringey Core Community Mental Health Teams who can help people to think about whether any of their needs might better be met by a team other than psychology.
If you would like to seek a referral to the service, please arrange an appointment with your GP.
What to expect
The Core Psychology Pathway will invite people who have been referred to the service to meet with a psychologist for an assessment. In this appointment, you will have an opportunity to describe what it is that you are wanting help with and think with the psychologist about the kind of treatment that you would find most helpful. The psychologist will adhere to professional standards for confidentiality in the hope of creating an environment in which you feel comfortable talking about your problems. The psychologist will also ask you questions about your life more generally, to see whether you have any other problems, such as physical health problems or problems with housing, that might benefit from treatment in another service.
If treatment is indicated, then you should be provided with options for your treatment. Together with the psychologist, you will arrange a plan for treatment that works for you. The psychologist will formalise this plan for treatment, which may mean accepting you onto one of our waiting lists for therapy. It might be the case that you are asked to wait for your treatment to start. Therefore, the psychologist will think with you about whether your mental health difficulties pose a risk to your health and safety and how it is that you will manage this.
We are a specialist team of mental health professionals. Out team consists of clinical and counselling psychologists, and psychotherapists. All have extensive experience of working in a variety of mental health services.
