Theatre trip highlights how recovery can be supportive through community and creativity
Service users and staff from the St Ann’s Drug and Alcohol Group, part of the Dual Diagnosis Network (DDN) in Haringey, recently enjoyed an uplifting outing to see "The White Chip" at Southwark Playhouse. The visit, made possible thanks to complimentary tickets generously provided by the show’s producers, offered group members a unique opportunity for reflection, connection, and celebration of recovery.
Described as “sharp, funny and moving,” The White Chip explores the complexities of addiction and the journey to recovery. The production is now in its final weeks, with its run concluding on Saturday 16 August.
The St Ann’s Drug and Alcohol Group was established two years ago by staff from the Early Intervention Service (EIS) at St Ann’s Hospital, in Haringey. The group is aimed at dually diagnosed clients – people who struggle with both mental health and substance misuse. The group provides a safe, non-judgemental space where members can openly explore both aspects of their recovery journeys.
The group, ran by DDN Recovery Worker Dan and EIS colleagues Marvin and Tony, meet weekly at Orchard House. They have developed a strong, supportive group of regular attendees and have created a warm, relaxed, friendly and supportive space that celebrates people’s progress; but also supports each other during more difficult times.
Here’s what two group members have to say about the group:
"I love the group because you hear what other people are going through, it reminds me that I’m not alone."
"One of the most beneficial groups I have attended, it keeps me accountable!"
The theatre trip was a highlight for the group and a testament to how recovery can be supported in creative and community-based ways.
Dan said:
“This play is centred around a person’s story of Alcohol Addiction and Recovery, so it is something close to the hearts of everyone who attends the group. Five members of the group attended, and we had a great day out! Thank you to the producers of the play, who made this possible!”
