In the heart of Camden, a once-in-a-generation redevelopment is bringing modern healthcare closer to our communities.

The St Pancras Hospital Transformation Programme is an ambitious NLFT project with the following objectives:
St Pancras Hospital is about a 10-minute walk from King’s Cross Station in the London Borough of Camden. The hospital is owned and run by North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT). At this site, we provide mental health care through outpatient and community services, primarily for people living in Camden and Islington.
St Pancras Hospital also hosts some physical healthcare services, including rehabilitation wards and a dialysis unit, which are provided by partner NHS trusts.
The striking buildings we see on the site today were constructed in the 1880s and 1890s as the infirmary and dormitories for the old St Pancras Workhouse. Our modern-day Gatehouse at the hospital’s entrance was once the nurses’ home. These Victorian buildings will be kept, renovated, and continue to be used in the next chapter of St Pancras Hospital’s history.
For several years, plans have been evolving to shape the future of the site.

In 2023, we sold two acres of the site to Moorfields NHS Foundation Trust, the UCL Institute for Ophthalmology, and Moorfields Eye Charity. This has enabled the construction of a brand new, integrated centre for eye care, research, and education, which is on track to open in 2027.
In 2025, we renewed our partnership with The King’s Cross Group (KXG) – the long-term owner and manager of the nearby King’s Cross estate – and agreed that we will sell the remainder of the St Pancras Hospital site – except for the South Wing – to them for redevelopment. We continue to work closely with KXG as proposals are developed for the future of the site.
The land sales agreed through the St Pancras Hospital Transformation Programme have already begun transforming healthcare services across Camden and Islington. The deals have allowed us to access more than £100 million of funding for new healthcare facilities. In 2024, NLFT opened two new sites that were specially designed and built for the services we provide. This means we can deliver better care for patients and high-quality workplaces for our staff. Highgate East is an award-winning inpatient setting for older adults and Lowther Road is a state-of-the-art community mental health hub.
The NHS will continue its long presence on the St Pancras Hospital site. NLFT will retain and upgrade the original, Victorian South Wing. The building will be sensitively repaired and refurbished to ensure that a range of modern healthcare services go on being provided here.
The NLFT services delivered from the refurbished South Wing will include:
CNWL (Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust) will continue to operate its rehabilitation wards and community teams from the South Wing. These services are for people living locally, whose physical abilities have been reduced through illness – such as a stroke, fall, or frailty.
Moorfields’ and UCL’s integrated centre for eye health will sit alongside our services as a new NHS neighbour on the St Pancras Hospital site. Their brand-new facility will bring together world leading research, healthcare, and education. The location – close to the Francis Crick Institute, UCLH, and Great Ormond Street Hospital – opens up exciting new partnerships across the London Knowledge Quarter.
Following extensive engagement with service users, carers, staff, and local partners, several services have already moved from the St Pancras Hospital site into modern, purpose designed premises across Camden and Islington.
A number of community health services provided by NLFT and CNWL – including Adult Autism and ADHD services, Heart Failure, Respiratory and Home Oxygen, Diabetes, and Podiatry – have relocated to newly refurbished spaces at the Peckwater Centre, in Kentish Town. Bringing these teams under one roof with the existing services at the Centre will help patients to access more joined-up care and allow staff more multidisciplinary collaboration.
More moves are planned for 2026. The Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Service will relocate to a specially designed setting in The Arts Building, in Finsbury Park. The Rivers Crisis House will move to Daleham Gardens in Belsize Park, which will reopen as an enlarged and completely renovated 12-bed crisis house. NLFT’s Headquarters will relocate to The Centro Buildings in Camden – about an eight-minute walk from the St Pancras Hospital site.
Looking ahead to 2027, the Dialysis service is expected to move to its preferred location on Finchley Road in Swiss Cottage, subject to approvals. This is also when the NLFT mental health services remaining at St Pancras Hospital will take up their new spaces in the upgraded South Wing.
These relocations mean services previously delivered in outdated settings will operate from environments specifically designed to support better care and more integrated working.
The redeveloped St Pancras Hospital site will become a vibrant, welcoming neighbourhood shaped around health and wellbeing. Alongside NHS services, the plans include:
Beyond providing healthcare, our vision is for the whole site to support positive mental and physical health through thoughtfully designed spaces, which encourage connection, movement, mindfulness, and a strong sense of community.
The site’s development partner, The King’s Cross Group (KXG), is the long term custodian of the nearby 67 acre King’s Cross estate. With a well-established track record in delivering successful, sustainable and well managed places, the Group focuses on creating vibrant, inclusive neighbourhoods that offer lasting value for surrounding communities.
