Today we mark Windrush Day recognising the contributions, resilience and lasting impact of the Windrush Generation and their descendants on communities across the UK.
The day commemorates the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948, carrying passengers from the Caribbean who answered Britian’s call to help rebuild the country following the Second World War. Many went on to make significant contributions to public life, including the NHS, transport, education, construction and public services.
Windrush Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the journey, sacrifices and achievements of those who helped shape modern Britain, while recognising the legacy they have created for future generations.
We have created a resource pack for you to download and learn more about this day and its significance: NLFT Windrush Day 2026...A History Lesson!

This year’s Windrush commemoration comes at a particularly significant moment following the recent knighthood of Sir Professor Patrick Vernon OBE, recognised in The King’s Birthday Honours for his services to equality, social justice and community activism, including the Windrush Scandal.
Sir Patrick previously served as a Non-Executive Director at Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust (North), one of the legacy organisations that now form NLFT. He did this for nearly three years, holding the position from September 2015 to June 2018.
We wish Sir Patrick a warm congratulations.
